John “On the Spot”: Seth Macfarlane does cover story for “The Hollywood Reporter”,says he may end “Family Guy”

So, yea “The Hollywood Reporter” did a really great cover story about Seth Macfarlane talking about all things “Fuzzy Door”(Seth’s production company). Here are a few bullet points:

  • Seth is doing yet ANOTHER animated venture, this time with Alex Borstein(MadTV, Lois from Family Guy) and Will and Grace scribe Gary Janetti.
  •  Flintstones is sounding great
  • The movie “Ted” in which he is directing sounds awesome
  • He is rebooting a space exploration series called “Cosmos”
  • He wants to reboot “Star Trek”(…Christ arent the movies enough?)
  • Despite over $200 million in ad revenue, Seth thinks Family Guy is past due to be taken off the air. Says, 7 years should be the max, but doesn’t rule out doing Family Guy movies.
  • Comments on the recent Simpsons contract situation

My thoughts? Well, he’s under a multi-million dollar contract so I don’t think it happens anytime soon. But, think of this, if Family Guy splits, I don’t think Cleveland Show sticks around much longer and American Dad was rumored to be cancelled before this season started. So, if you kids are counting at home, the Animation Domination we have right now could be drastically changed within the next 4 years! Simpsons contract would be up, and Seth could just have Flintstones and the Borstein project. Is that why Fox is greenlighting all these different comedy properties? Also, note if you watched the “6 Days to Air” South Park special, according to Trey Parker while pitching his idea to the Program Director for Fox, he said that the reason they didn’t pick up South Park(also due to expire in the next couple of years) was because it strayed away from the typical “family” setting, so a husband, wife, and kids.

Right now EVERY show on AniDom has this same setting with the exception of the upcoming Allen Gregory, And Then There Was Gordon, and Napoleon Dynamite greenlights, all of which stray away from the tried and true formula. Could it be Fox is laxing its rules in a post-Seth animated world?  I’m not sure, but remember where they brought back Seth from…Cartoon Network? And there is more talent over at that network now then there has been in about 5 to 6 years with Adult Swim bringing us some of the best in the business, so don’t be surprised if a Brendon Small(with another expiring contract) or a Brad Neely flirt with the idea of going from midnight EST on a cable network to primetime slot on a major network.

We shall see…but what is the moral of this story kids? Money Talks…
