Review: Steven Universe “Earthlings”

Our trusty trio – Amethyst, Peridot, and Steven – have come upon Jasper while checking out the Beta Kindergarten. Jasper is talking to one of the corrupted gems she captured. Peridot suggests they go back to the barn but Amethyst has already started sneaking up on Jasper. Even though Jasper surprisingly knows Amethyst is behind her, Amethyst still gets ready to fight the larger quartz.

The fight begins and it looks like Amethyst doesn’t have a chance. But now she has upgraded whips, thanks to Bismuth. Her new whips manage to push Jasper backwards, for a little while anyway. Soon, Jasper is back on the offensive. When Jasper kicks Amethyst away, Amethyst lands near Steven. Once again, Amethyst starts complaining that she can’t win. But Steven gives her a small pep talk and a hug…and the two fuse into Smoky Quartz. Angry that the gems have fused once again, Jasper attacks. However, Smoky Quartz now has a yoyo weapon created from Steven’s shield and Amethyst’s whips. Using this new weapon, Smoky Quartz easily beat Jasper. But Jasper has a trick up her sleeve. Most of the corrupted gems have escaped their cages during this battle. Jasper grabs one of them and fuses with it. Smoky Quartz uses her yoyos to create a tornado, which eventually blow the Jasper-fusion apart.

Almost immediately, Smoky Quartz notices that the corruption has infected Jasper. She quickly unfuses so Steven can rush over to help. But Jasper refuses. Jasper directs her growing anger at Rose Quartz, claiming that she could never forgive Rose for what she did to Jasper’s diamond. Jasper becomes fully corrupted and attacks Steven. Before she can reach him, Peridot stabs her with a metal bar from the cages. Jasper poofs into her gem and Amethyst bubbles her.

The trio head home, tired from their fight. Before they reach the barn, they see Garnet, Pearl, and Lapis with a bubbled Ruby Squad.

A new fusion! Steven and Amethyst’s fusion into Smoky Quartz is rather awesome. Since Steven is usually against fighting, it’s cool to see his defensive weapons get turned into offensive weapons that are actually useful. While I’d hate to see Smoky Quartz get over-used (since she seems so powerful), I would love to see her fighting with the tough Pearl and Garnet. What a battle that would be!
