Our Take

The heart of the story comes to the forefront with Draculaura practicing magic which is considered Taboo within the Monster High universe. Of course, during the hijinx of the episode while she has trouble coming to terms with her desire to practice magic and has a tough time telling her father, At least her friends still have her back even if there’s a potential conflict later down the line…

The other episode, focuses on Frankie (The “Frankenstein-inspired character) who tells a story through her magical recording device which is a weird eyeball. In a nutshell it’s your by-the-numbers “bad luck” episode that relies too much on physical comedy through misfortune. For the most part, some of the humor works but it introduces a new character in the process.

For a pilot, this was a good start to a promising new series despite this being a reboot of a preexisting cartoon inspired by a Toyline. Much to my shock, this new series has Shea Fontana at the helm as “co-executive producer” (and sometimes writer) which is a big deal since she was involved in the first “DC Superhero Girls” series which I liked before the overly wacky (and sometimes mean-spirited) Lauren Faust reboot. And having the headmistress voiced by Debra Wilson of Mad TV fame is a welcoming addition. Many of Shea’s lighthearted and wholesome character archetypes, tropes, and atmosphere work even if it’s a completely different property than what she’s done before, and I look forward to seeing what comes next!
