Review: Mighty Magiswords “School’s In, Oh Bummer!”

Are we bummed for the penultimate episode?

Overview (Possible Spoilers Below)

After visiting an “Adventure Academy” school reunion event, It turns out that Vambre & Prohyas never graduated the Adventure Academy part of their class, and need to go back to school to earn their diplomas.

Our Take

Much of the humor in this episode is slightly relatable when you see the parable of people going to high school reunions 10 years after you graduate to question how much they’ve accomplished as people, but the episode’s setup is kinda formulaic if you’ve seen this plot-structure before in past movies, TV shows, and cartoons, where a grown adult has to go back to school and must face some sort of obstacle to make you root for them.

While the episode spends it’s running time with their Instructor being their Rival adventurer Hoppus, who does make a valid point that the two often use them as magic wands more than swords in action and becomes strict & frustrated at the shenanigans of the Warrior Siblings, but it isn’t until a specific disaster occurs due to the incompetence of a young student named Glory, is where they find a creative solution that doesn’t involve school teachings to make a point to their Teachers about thinking outside their school’s teachings.

The art & characters consistently keep things colorful & lively, with animation, clever dialogue and creatively funny Magiswords that do different things that while moving the plot in a brisk, pace while still delivering on the laughs.

Above all, while the episode started out with the predictable & cliche “grown adults going back to school” story we’ve seen in nearly everything, the ending managed to make things more engaging with a possible overarching storyline in the form of an old map-piece that Prohayas has had for years that now has potential importance in later episodes.
