Review: MAD Magazine “MAD Spoofs The 90’s”

I feel as if most kids nowadays really don’t appreciate the past. They’ll know all the words to a Ke$ha song, but have no idea that Diddy was actually a rapper. None were alive when Tupac and Biggie was the biggest feud around. Who’s the biggest feud now? Some “housewives” on TV? Do some research and see who your heroes looked up to. Get a better understanding of where they came from and maybe you can better yourself. Or you could just read MAD Spoofs The 90’s.

Basically, this special edition of MAD is nothing more than a compilation of different gags and bits from MAD Magazines that originally ran in the 1990’s. That’s pretty cool and all, but I was expecting a lot more out of it. When I hear “spoofs” I really expect original content. As this is a rehash and reprint of old material I received no original content at all. You’ve got some of the best writers in the game, MAD, you’d think you could take any number of them and have them draw up the 90’s. Instead we are greeted with such topical fodder and “The Spice Girls” and “Titanic.”

Now don’t get me worng, I would have totally paid the normal cover price of $5.99 for this bad boy, but this comes with a hefty $14.99 price tag, which is WAY too ambitious for the price. Had there been new material, or possibly some behind the scenes stories this would be a different story. We do get small intros for each segment, but it’s more common sense than actual material.

This edition of MAD might be best suited for the die-hard collectors only. For the younger, or more casual fans, the price might scare you away and not knowing about the source material might leave you with more questions than laughs.

The Verdict: SKIP THIS ISSUE, unless you really like 90’s humor.
