REVIEW: GRAVITY FALLS “FIGHT FIGHTERS”

A video-game fighter comes to life and defends Dipper.

Spoilers Below

Wendy’s away on vacation and Dipper and Robbie’s dislike for each other is coming to a head. As such, Robbie challenges Dipper to a fight but the little guy isn’t all too confident as he’s quite a bit smaller than his foe and lacks any sort of martial arts training. As such, Dipper sets off to his local arcade to let off some steam when he stumbles onto a cheat code crudely written on the side of a game called Fight Fighters. He puts in the code and is asked to summon one of the fighters in which case he picks Rumble McSkirmish.

Its time for the fight, and despite Rumble’s appearance Robbie still has the balls to mouth off, but Dipper just wants his new friend to scare off the wannabe lead singer. Instead Rumble kicks the crap out of Robbie and sends the kid running for the hills with the martial arts expert running behind him.

Meanwhile, Mabel seems to suspect that her uncle is afraid of heights, so she and her pig set off to try and rid Grunkle of his fear. As such she decides to take Stan up a water tower in an attempt to calm his fear but soon Rumble, Rob, and Dipper show up and Rumble almost immediately starts attacking the same water town which now has Robbie on it. Dipper is trying to stop the out of control video game character but to no avail. As a result, Dipper has to face off in a fight with Rumble but he gets JACKED up but with the “Game Over” Rumble disappears. With his bodyguard gone, Robbie makes a threat to hit Dipper but instead the guys truce. Wendy comes back to find both the guys beaten up and accuses them of fighting, but Dip and Rob deny the claims and just decide to keep their hate secret. Oh yea, and Stan conquers his fear of heights…or did he just pass them on to Mabel??

As a guy who has been playing Street Fighter for over a decade and games in general for twice as long, I can safely say this episode was totally a fan writing TO the fans in a sense. Like “this is a story FOR gamers, FROM gamers’ and I’m sure it didn’t hurt that Disney was playing Wreck-It Ralph promos the whole time either. The main plot of the episode was really funny, giving old-school gamers a bunch of nods all the while keeping it grounded in the Gravity Falls-verse. Soos provided for hysterical interruptions and Dipper was extra adorable. That said, the one gripe I did have was the Mabel plot which felt too plain and out of place in an episode reaching for the stars. That said, Gravity Falls is making the rounds in being the best new animated series of the year and with episodes like this going, its soon going to be a one-horse race.
