Mr. Fischoeder’s new pier attraction, a mechanical shark, goes haywire and terrorizes the town, and it falls to Bob and the family to catch it.

Spoilers Below

Fischoeder is looking to open up a new attraction for the pier and Bob & Linda recommend a shark-induced ride called ‘The Deepening’. Despite the fact that Teddy wants nothing to do with the ride, Calvin orders it online and debuts it to an anxious crowd.  Tina takes a special interest in the shark as after watching footage of the feature film of which the ride was based on, feels that the shark was sorely misunderstood and as such joins her siblings in setting it free! Actually, the kids turn the shark on and it starts terrorizing the downtown area and Calvin can’t shut it off so this leads the Belchers in looking to fix this mess once and for all.

The townspeople quickly get restless and the kids come clean leading the Belchers in becoming the social pariahs even to loyal customer Teddy of whom never wanted the shark in the first place. Bob and the family try a number of different measures in stopping the shark but instead, they give it spikes and give it electrical powers ala Electro. Eventually, Bob is able to bury the shark but it ends up in the Belcher basement and comes through the floor of the store dragging Mort down with it deeper into the hole before it comes back.  The shark then grabs onto Teddy and it’s looking pretty bad but thanks to a malfunctioning ice cream machine, Bob is able to stop the shark much to the slight dismay of Tina.

Our Take

What’s great about Bob’s Burgers is that they aren’t doing straight-up parodies of popular films, rather they integrate well-known scenes from films and but it in a Belcher blender that mixes into a delicious treat that goes down easy. I think Tina was more deranged in this episode than maybe ever before, quickly becoming obsessed with an inanimate object that nearly kills everyone and gets put into a fight of the century candidate with her dad. Teddy had an obsession with the shark too, but he was quite different as he was just looking to get back at it after years of trauma caused by an event that leads to his obesity and over-eating habits. But, Jon Benjamin’s Bob was a HUGE win for tonight, not only with his tricks to try and bring down his shark, but with the whole conversation about cancer with Teddy as he’s being eaten by the shark, plus throwing in a bit of belly-talk. This show will quickly be ‘deepening’ the pockets of Loren Bouchard and his cast & crew for quite some time as I don’t think Bob’s Burgers is going anywhere for quite some time.
