Paramount Network’s “Browntown” Could Be The New Network’s Way Of Incubating An Original Animated Series

History is on the network’s side.

Paramount Networks has picked up a new 30-minute sketch series called Browntown. Inspired by a show format produced by Doug Greiff(mitú).

Featuring a prominent multicultural cast of emerging comics, improv actors, popular social influencers and celebrity cameos, “BROWNTOWN,” will be set in a fictional, predominantly Latino neighborhood, designed to reflect today’s diverse America.

Each half-hour episode will feature signature recurring characters from the “BROWNTOWN” neighborhood, and revolve around a central theme designed to bring awareness and celebrate issues that are especially relevant to Latino youth in America. Episodes will consist of studio-based sketches, digital shorts, music parodies, animated shorts, and more.

BROWNTOWN exemplifies mitú’s ongoing commitment to open doors and create opportunities for the next generation of diverse talent and storytellers, bringing fresh voices and faces to media.

Our Take

So, MadTV (Family Guy), Saturday Night Live (TV Funhouse), Tracy Ullman Show (The Simpsons), all examples of sketch series that have had successful animated series spun from them. When this series premieres, we should keep an eye on the animated sketches and see if they can’t help the fledgling network help mark its own path unlike when Spike TV tried to produce adult animation and failed miserably. A Latino-produced animated series could be a winner.
