NYCC 2021 Recap: First Impressions Of Comedy Central’s “Washingtonia” / “Fairview”

New York Comic-Con is back in full swing with both virtual and in-person options for viewing panels and one of the only ones I was really looking forward to was this one from Comedy Central featuring two new adult animation projects from Stephen Colbert. Fresh off an Emmy nomination for Tooning Out The News which now premieres new 30-minute episodes every Friday, as opposed to the daily premieres they used to do, Colbert is producing two new animated projects with frequent collaborator RJ Fried who was on hand with cast and crew from both projects. As it stands, Washingtonia is slated to have a Fall 2021 premiere, and Fairview is slated to premiere sometime in 2022, but these projects, despite similar lineages, are slightly different takes on the political comedy spectrum. After watching clips for both and hearing both panels, here is our takeaways from both new franchises, but both clips are below so you can make your own assumptions:

Our Take

Kinda looking like a cross between Tooning Out The News, and Fisher Price’s Little People, Fairview is political comedy for those who have caught one of many Comedy Central’s South Park marathons that air on Wednesday Nights.

Synopsis:

Fairview is a weekly hyper-topical, half-hour animated series from Executive Producer Stephen Colbert and the creators of “Tooning Out the News.”

Our Take

Washingtonia looks more like the offspring of Showtime’s Our Cartoon President, complete with returning stars like James Adomian who reprises his role as Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, and a number of other voices. SNL’er James Austin Johnson is Donald Trump with other big name stars coming on board like Gary Cole, Thomas Lennon, Stephen Colbert, Andy Daly, Jon Glaser, Zach Cherry, and John Viener. The trailer shows that the feature film takes a more fantastical approach to political humor.

Synopsis:

Welcome to Washingtonia, a political satire cartoon from Executive Producer Stephen Colbert that follows an inexperienced politician as he rises in rank and recognition.
