English Dub Review: The Day I Became a God “The Day of Filming”

Overview

As Yota studies in his room, Hina walks in saying the world will end in nine days and Sora has finished the script for her movie. When Yota reads the script, he enjoys it. He then gathers his friends to help shoot the movie. Once Sora finishes the storyboard, she explains the plot of the movie. On the day the shoot begins, Yota and Hina play the lead roles, but not without encountering a few production problems…

Meanwhile, in a separate subplot, the hacker named “Hiroto Suzuki” is still investigating when he finds Korogi’s torn down house. As he attempts to retrieve his stuff, he uncovers something unexpected.

Our Take

Today’s episode continues Sora’s attempt at making a movie from episode 2, except that the underlying plot is slowly coming full circle as she sets up a concrete premise, script, and some storyboards, and has already shot a few scenes, and also brings back everyone we’ve seen so far altogether to complete the job. Quite fun and funny though with Hina/Odin’s non-compliance. It’s also been a while since we’ve seen Hiroto, and therein lies the secondary plot to figure out Dr. Korogi’s real intentions.

Once again, this is not a bad show. The production values and some serviceable comedy are where it shines the most. It simply fails when you look beyond the surface level and realize how far removed the main characters are from the actual plot itself. They keep randomly cutting to this hacker subplot that also just randomly appeared out of the blue to drive the plot forward. Clearly, this all revolves around Hina somehow but the pacing of the show and the world seems so haphazardly thought out.

This is my first show by Jun Maeda, and hearing the decent track record of his other shows being “emotional roller coasters”, I was waiting for some type of big plot twist, as I already felt the story building up. The last 6 episodes were spent on introducing and exploring every character so far, and with the ending telling us that there’s “6 days left” until the supposed apocalypse happens, it still remains to be seen if the story will potentially amount to something in the show’s overall narrative.
