English Dub Review: The Day I Became a God “The Day a God Descended”

Overview (Spoilers Below)

The story begins at the end of the last summer vacation of high school, as a young student named Youta Narukami (who’s name in Kanji translates to Sun-God… nice-one writers.) spends his days preparing for the university entrance exams, a young girl comes into his life calling herself “Odin” suddenly appears, proclaiming herself an “All-knowing god”. Youta is confused and like most logical people, does not believe Odin when she tells him his “world will end in 30 days.”

But progressively, after witnessing Odin’s prediction powers, Youta begins to believe whatever she says at this point with mixed results… Odin, who comes across as innocent and childlike despite her supernatural powers, asks to stay at Youta’s home. Thus begins the start of their lively summer before the end of the world.

Our Take

This was quite a good start, but I’ve just been left so many questions for this unraveling mystery they’re setting up and how confusing and inconsistent her claims are getting. For starters, She knows everything yet she doesn’t know about certain types of sports, doesn’t know his name, or simple things that would be common sense for the average human. And yet she doesn’t seem entirely clueless about society though which makes it weird she didn’t know about basketball (yet does know baseball). She acts like she both can & can’t read minds, yet she does seem to have some sort of clairvoyance, possibly. The main character believes it quite easily after just some weather, traffic, and horse race predictions despite failing to help him get the hook-up with a female classmate of his.

But I think the most ominous aspect of this episode is hearing Youta’s mother’s reaction when he begrudgingly asks permission for her to stay… like why would she ask specific details such as how old she is or what clothes she’s wearing? and it gives off the implication that she may actually know who Youta is talking about. Maybe the mom and Odin had an actual history Youta doesn’t know about? I guess that remains to be seen in future episodes.

Upon research, the scriptwriter for this show is Jun Maeda who often has a decent track record when it comes to making some emotionally impactful anime adaptations of his Light Novels such as Angel Beats, Charlotte, and Clannad. So It already seems to have the potential for something emotionally moving with the whole “30 days till the world ends” aspect unless there’s some big twist at the end that plays with our expectations as half the very first episode already has for me.
