English Dub Review: The Day I Became a God “Days That Pass By”

Overview

After a series of big-twists that lead to Hina’s departure, Youta attempts to move on with his life. And later encounters Hiroto Suzuki (The Hacker), at school who claims to be a new transfer student. But after a long time-skip, Hiroto eventually calls out Youta for his obliviousness and as he is about to leave, Youta catches up with him and Hiroto finally reveals that he knows of Hina’s recent whereabouts…

Our Take

While the proceeding arguably takes a somber direction, the pacing moved things too fast and didn’t develop them enough despite the narrative trying its damnedest to make me cry. What I also found to be in poor taste was the fact that after Infiltrating the research facility (with Suzuki’s help) and despite what was instructed of Youta, he can’t follow simple instructions in the hospital either. The researcher told him what not to do in her current mental state and Youta impulsively does it anyway. I don’t care how emotional you are, that’s just being inconsiderate of her condition.

At the very least, the aftermath of her condition was sympathetic, and If there’s anything relatable about what’s currently happening to Hina. It kinda works as a parable to people who have lost family members or loved ones who suffer from memory loss-related conditions such as brain damage or even Alzheimer’s.

Overall, if this show didn’t waste half the episodes with wacky hijinks and included actual character growth and bonding then it would’ve been well-executed on an emotional level. Usually, Jun Maeda (the show’s creator) has a decent track record of being the Nicholas Sparks of anime in terms of writing well-written semi-tragic stories. And despite everything feeling so damn rushed, it should be really interesting to see how far Maeda’s going to drag this out for the last two episodes…
