Blu-Ray Review: Regular Show Seasons 1 and 2

Regular Show has had a monster year for Cartoon Network and after seeing how MUCH they mean to the network with the show’s big huge displays at Comic Con, it’s pretty awesome to take a trip down memory lane with the Season 1 and 2 Blu-Ray out now in stores (although I looked in both my local Best Buys and the home release wasn’t there so I had to go to Suncoast/FYE so you may want to just buy it on Amazon). The new release comes with 40 episodes, ALL with commentaries, and a bevy of special features. Well, not really bevy, it’s more like a bunch of special features on disc one and only two on the second disc. That said we are getting some pretty decent bang for your buck, here are some highlights:

Pilot

Everyone a fan of Regular Show owes it to themselves to watch this never before seen pilot. Why? Because it’s a testament in seeing how far this series has come. A whole bunch has changed since this presentation, from the look and personalities of the characters to how fantastic the show transitions from act to act, this is the real deal. It isn’t perfect, but perfection takes time and I think after four seasons the producers have definitely learned a lot from this first episode.

Story boards for first Regular Show Ep

It’s always entertaining whenever I get emails from people asking if I can get them work on say a Cartoon Network series. Well, wanna know how to make a good show? Learn how to story board! This feature is a fascinating look at how JG Quintel story boards an episode of Regular Show and to see this young man exhibit such finesse and heart into his post-it-note boards and after all these seasons he’s still got it. That’s why he has the Emmy.

Interview/tour of his offices at Cartoon Network

Wanna see where genius gets inspiration? Well, I hope you love messy offices because JG takes you through Cartoon Network Studios to show you where the magic happens i.e. writing, animation, etc. MARBLE ROOOMM!

There are a bunch of wasted features on the discs like animatics, commercials, trailers, and Comic Con stuff all of which you can probably get on Youtube. But, if you were to purchase every single episode of Regular Show for the first two episodes you’d be staring at $80, so for around $30 you get 2-discs with some great features. Great buy for a great show. I would say best buy, but now I hate the store.
