ABC may want to introduce its new “Imaginary Friend”

Back off the success of The Muppets, it looks as though ABC is getting busy with hybrid comedies because Deadline.com is reporting exclusively that ABC has ordered a pilot for Imaginary Gary, a CGI animated/live-action comedy series from the producers of The Goldbergs and Disney animator Patrick Osborne.

According to the article:

Imaginary Gary centers on a thirty-something bachelor whose life is turned upside-down when he finally meets the love of his life — a divorced working mom with three kids. This triggers even more upheaval when the slightly unhinged imaginary friend he created as an only child suddenly reappears in his life to help him navigate the transition from single guy to family man.

Not only is The Muppets a solid hybrid franchise, but all Disney (parent company of ABC) has to do is look at a show like Kirby Buckets on Disney XD and know how to do live-action/animated comedy sitcoms. It will be interesting to see if ABC gets serious about animated comedy again, with a CGI-production certainly being ground breaking for the network.
