Review: Mr. Pickles “My Dear Boy”

Frankly, my deer, I don’t give a damn.

The urge to throw in as many deer and doe puns as humanly possible is strong for this one, but I’ll stop myself from having too much fawn.

I’ve said it a few times, but this season of Mr. Pickles seems to serve as a throwback season. There is nothing wrong with a throwback season of a show, except typically, it is not the second season of a series, and more like a dedicated season in the double-digit numbers. There is a difference between the continuity of a show, and just random references to past episodes. The latter seems to be the case for this episode/season of Mr. Pickles. It seems as though every week, there are references to a past season 1 episode, and then the episode carries on; almost like the show realizes that it only has one foot to lean on, so it brings attention to its first season, which was quite successful. I may be speaking to soon, as the season 2 finale is setting us up to reveal that the show has simultaneous universes, a la Rick and Morty, but that seems unlikely for this show.

A rare long-nippled fox is gunned down at the start of this episode, and it sets the tone for this animal-themed, odd, episode. Tommy wants a bb gun and after his father repeatedly refusing to allow him to get one, Mr. Goodman goes out and buys one for him. I wish I had that style of parenting when I grew up. Dad, can you buy me this brand new Lexus for my graduation gift?

Tommy and Mr. Pickles meet up with Bigfoot, the stereotypical Italian who was turned into the hairy creature by the Witness Protection Agency; yeah, that one. His deer boy (get it? dear boy) is handed off to Tommy to watch for the day so that Bigfoot can spend some time with Mrs. Bigfoot.

The episode wasn’t bad, it just feels as though the writers (Matt and Dave and Sean) could not think of anything to do besides continue onto an already established plot.
