Review: Steven Universe – “Same Old World”

As we know it…

Spoilers Below

As Peridot regales the Gems with her stories of the Cluster, Steven is busy worrying about Lapis. When she finally wakes up, Lapis tells Steven she has to leave. However, her departure doesn’t last very long. Once the Gems (minus Peridot) and Steven’s father leave, Steven finds Lapis sitting on top of the nearby silo. Lapis laments the fact that she doesn’t belong anywhere. She can’t return to Homeworld and she can’t stay on Earth. But Steven sets out to prove her wrong. The two friends fly over various parts of the Earth as Steven explains how cities and forests and oceans all differ. They eventually come upon the Galaxy Warp, when Lapis was abandoned by the other Homeworld Gems. Lapis tells Steven the story of how she was abandoned. When they leave the Galaxy Warp, Lapis feels more out of place than ever. Steven tells her that everything changes on Earth and maybe her feelings for Earth will change as well. Finally, Lapis agrees to stay on Earth. Unfortunately, she decides to live on the same farm Peridot already claimed as her own.

While this wasn’t a particularly exciting episode, it was great to see Lapis’ backstory. She’s always been bitter or angry or depressed. Now we can see why she feels the way she does. I would love to see Lapis join the rest of the Gems on Team Steven. She would be a great addition once she can get over her past.
