Review: Adventure Time “Bun Bun” (S7Ep32)

Spoilers Below

The new Adventure Time episode “Bun Bun” was super strange, but hey, that’s to be expected from AdTi. I mean, we’re talking about an episode centered around a sentient cinnamon bun.

All that aside, “Bun Bun” was a very interesting statement on change from chaos. Since Cinnamon Bun is growing up, Princess Bubblegum creates Bun Bun (in true PB fashion) from past cinnamon bun experiments– a cute creature that basically does what it wants.

Bun Bun’s voice is so adorable and innocent, you don’t see the dark side behind it all– much like in life, you don’t always know someone’s true intentions if they’re being really nice to you outwardly.

Then, we have Flame King, who Bun Bun sets free, and wants to wage war. But Bun Bun tells him instead of war stuff, he should try chipmunk stuff instead. Strangely enough, once Flame King is set free, the usually vengeful and ugly part of himself lessens. This is a pretty bold statement on the effects of imprisonment.

Meanwhile, Flame Princess and Finn have some interesting moments– they’ve both changed a lot since they dated. They spend some time just working on their friendship. There’s still a hint of something else there, though, and maybe they’ll address that in future episodes. I really always prefer Finn with someone else other than PB. She’s too obvious, and totally the wrong choice for him.

“Bun Bun” is a strange little episode, but a nice one, and there are definitely some statements on redemption, the prison system, and peoples’ true intentions.
