Review: Wander Over Yonder “The Legend / The Bad Neighbors”

“The Legend

Wander and Sylvia save a group of kids from a Dominator invasion as the kids tell stories about a familiar mythic hero. Too bad Wander and Sylvia ain’t ever hear of ’em. Interestingly enough, the stories revolve around characters that sort of look and sound like Wander and Sylvia, but we get them in various animation formats like black and white, notebook pages, and a few more that would make for awesome TV shows by themselves. Melodie has the weirdest story that says Hater may be Wander’s dad and Dominator his sister.

After story time, Wander and Sylvia have to do battle with a Dominator robot right in front of the kids which should change their tunes moving forward.

Our Take

This episode almost played like Simpsons Treehouse of Horror because we got various tales featuring Wander and Sylvia but in different aesthetics that were tons of fun. Sabrina Carpenter did a fantastic job voicing ‘Melodie’, and really all the kids made a nice change of pace as they supplanted Wander as the wide-eyed play-time things.

The Bad Neighbors”

Peepers desperately tries to come up with a plan to save the galaxy from Dominator, while Hater obsesses over their jerky new neighbor. The two are living in a suburban neighborhood so as to lay low while they concoct their plan. Their neighbor? Emperor Awesome. Turns out, Emperor Awesome is terrified of Dominator and he’s hiding so as to escape imprisonment.

Instead of battling in space, Hater and Awesome spend the time battling over lawns on the back drop of a 90s sitcom. Awesome decides to throw a big ass party with other villains and not invite Hater all the while Peepers is begging his boss to sit down and help him come up with a plan to stop Dominator. Instead, Hater stays fixated on ruining Awesome’s BBQ to which Peepers convinces him to throw an even BIGGER cook out that causes everyone to ditch Awesome. After winning the cul de sac, Hater and the Watch Dogs leave the planet promising to take down Dominator once and for all.

Our Take

This was a little better than last week’s Hater bit. I hope moving forward Hater can get out of his stupid obsession with Dominator and prepare for battle. This week played out more like classic episodes of Home Improvement or even The Simpsons and it was very funny. Granted, we kind of get a plot hole of how the hell Awesome got out of Dominator’s confines in the first place, but overall, this suburban tale hit the right notes.
