Review: Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man: Web-Warriors “The Revenge of Arnim Zola”

ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN

Spoilers Below

Spidey, Cloak, and the gang head to the helicarrier to take down Arnim Zola, but run into synths concocted from popular Marvel villains.

The villains are taken down, but we’ve got one problem…Venom and Rhino keep arguing, which eventually turns into fighting, which then turns into not paying attention when Spidey is thrown down a shaft by Arnim Zola.

Spidey gets saved, but all three eventually end up in Arnim Zola’s tubes where the giant robot is absorbing everyone’s powers. Zola tells us that Spider-Man’s body should do just fine in being Zola’s NEW human form which leads us into a dream world where Spidey and Zola does battle.

Somehow Venom and Rhino are able to escape their confinements, and subdue Arnim long enough for Spidey to have to figure out how Zola’s mind works. Rhino and Venom are caught again, but this time Spidey beats the shit out of Zola’s mind using the powers of his friends. Spidey wakes up in the real world, and grabs Iron-Spidey’s armor which allows him to launch an EMP that fries everything Zola, and awakens the entire faculty and class of SHIELD. Triskelion is rebuilt, and somehow Spider-Man is still in training.

Our Take

I really hope this SHIELD academy shit ends soon, because it’s starting to not make any sense. Like, why is Spider-Man in any sort of training after saving pretty much everybody? And no matter how many times it happens, I can’t seem to get past just how terrible Rhino and Venom’s characters are. I mean, Venom is just a rag doll, and doesn’t look imposing what-so-ever which is rather depressing. Rhino is getting some of the Hulk’s jokes from The Avengers, but is somehow still arguing with Venom.

With that said, Arnim Zola’s battle was well-thought out, and 3D modeling was used quite effectively throughout. But, the Synth character designs were atrocious, and early cracks in the show’s character origins are starting to rear their ugly heads.
