Toronto Maple Leafs Use ‘The Simpsons’ Reference to Joke with New York TV Station

As most people are aware, the 2014-2015 NHL season recently ended when the Chicago Blackhawks bested the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games to win the Stanley Cup.

Apparently nobody told WCBS-TV in New York, who reported that not only are the Toronto Maple Leafs still playing, but they defeated the New York Mets baseball team on Thursday by a score of 7-1.

Seeing this unfold, the Maple Leafs wasted no time jumping on Twitter and responding with a gem-of-a-line straight out of The Simpsons season 7 episode, “Much Apu About Nothing”: “The ‘Ny’ Mets are not our favourite squadron.”

Which proves two points: First, the Leafs have a fantastically geeky sense of humor that should be commended. And second, the Mets apparently can’t beat anyone – even a hockey team.
