GAMES Review: Mickey Delivery Dash

Have you seen the amazing new Mickey Mouse short called Croissant de Triomphe yet? If you haven’t then please stop reading this review and check that out HERE. For two reasons, one it’s just an amazingly animated cartoon from the hands of Disney and Mercury Filmworks the same people who produced such classics as Ned’s Newt and more recently Jake and the Never Land Pirates. Plus the studio has already developed some more shorts (and thanks to me being in Canada I can’t watch them at all 🙁 ) No Service, New York Weenie and Yodelburg. But let’s move past the amazing short because right now we got a really fun game to review. A game that I could consider to be 10/10 fun. Oops did I spoil my thoughts on the game already. Contextual story time!

The story is the exact same as Croissant de Triomphe, Minnie after very stupidly not stocking up on croissants calls Daisy who relays to Mickey to get some more. Now Mickey, with his magical scooter with a face, must ride through Paris’s landmarks to deliver the croissants before Minnie’s customers do something crazy like order something else on the menu. Now to start off, in both this game and the short itself they both have beautiful animation, if only a bit more pixellated in the game version. As well the music accompaniment creates an entrancing French atmosphere that makes the loading bits of the game very soothing, creating a diametric tonal shift during gameplay where it becomes more fast paced and frantic.

But seriously I haven’t even started talking about the gameplay yet. Press the up and down arrow keys to switch between the three rows Mickey drives in, press the right arrow key to speed up Mickey and finally click the space bar to have Mickey jump over pot holes, cars and the police. Each level starts off with a set time of 1:00 and Mickey must complete each level before time runs out.  Mickey must also collect croissants (off the street no less) to add to his score at the end of each level and clocks with add 5 seconds each to his time. Now on a fundamental and a basic level these mechanics work almost flawlessly as the quick pace you must keep to get a high score and the growing amount of obstacles on each level it makes the game a very adrenaline pumping experience.

There are two other upgrades that I quite frankly love for the exact opposite I hated them in the game Regular Show: Ride ‘Em Rigby. In this game you have two upgrades which you can collect, a rocket which connects to your car making you go super fast, and a magnet which pulls in the croissants to you. Both of these upgrades come infrequently and when you do collect either of them, or both if you’re lucky, it creates both a visual treat and gives you practically a break for a few seconds. Compare this infrequent system to Ride ‘Em Rigby’s find one on almost every 10th obstacle. Ride ‘Em Rigby’s upgrade and power-ups didn’t work because as it comes so frequently the power-ups seize to be special in the slightest because you’re sick of seeing them and the power-ups last so long for long stretches of the game it completely defangs any sort of challenge making the game about as fun as watching paint dry.

The final mechanic I’d like to mention is Delivery Dash’s branching level paths. As you go through the levels the path will split up into two different levels, all taking place in different locations straight from the short. I like this because this creates some much needed replayability. Sure there’s only like 4 different paths you can take and even on those different paths you will always have to play like Daisy’s Bakery, and Barbizon but all the levels are well designed and all the animation is practically perfect… EXCEPT for a few graphic glitches in the level Le Tour Eiffel.

Oops

When just boiled down to my basic reaction I really loved this game. More then any game I’ve played for Bubble Blabber thus far. I will say some of this love might stem from my love of the short as the game really captures the story of the short and tells it with zero words. But even if I put that aside the game itself is very well made and with its branching paths it’s a lot of fun and I fully recommend it.

SCORE: 10 OUT OF 10
