English Dub Review: I Was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince so I Can Take My Time Perfecting My Magical Ability “The Cataclysm Named Guisarme”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
Ren is confronted by the demon lord Guisarme, who has stolen Jade’s body and teleportation power.  Guisarme is intent on seizing the bodies of the Assassin’s Guild as well when Lloyd arrives in the nick of time to defend them.  Can his profound magic overpower the formidable demon?

Our Take:
The surprising reveal of Guisarme puts the series in an unexpected position regarding its tone.  One minute, we were treated to something light-hearted and goofy, and the next, we were up against a demon that seemingly drove Jade to suicide and stole his body and powers.  Considering that we’re nearing the end of the season, this sudden change-up does feel needed to elevate its formulaic structure, especially since Guisarme seemed more formidable than the previous two demons.  One became Lloyd’s Familiar, and the other became the boy’s test subject for his immense magic.  Unfortunately for Lloyd, Guisarme is the type of demon who wouldn’t go down without a fight, mainly because he’s way above the different demon classes.
Another reason is his mana, which is powerful enough to cut down Lloyd’s impenetrable barriers.  While Lloyd survived most of Guisarme’s attacks, the demon was always one step ahead of the magical boy.  Meanwhile, the Assassin’s Guild puts their controlled magic to the test as they attempt to dispel Guisarme’s demonic minions and escape the castle.  Despite only meeting the Assassin’s Guild a couple of episodes ago, it does offer another attempt at providing depth into the friendly “criminals” as they’re about to meet their demise.  Honestly, this would’ve been more effective if we spent more time with the Assassin’s Guild in the season, but that’s just me being turned off by the series for its odd designs and plot.
Like last week’s episode, “The Cataclysm Named Guisarme” shows that the series is already improving at the last minute, but not by much.  It offers a formidable demon lord that matches Lloyd’s OP level, and the animation for Lloyd flying through the castle was quite decent.  Additionally, the series attempted to provide some actual stakes for the characters, mainly the Assassin’s Guild, even if the execution was hit-and-miss.  Next week’s episode should be interesting, especially now that Saloum’s army, including Sylpha, is joining the fight.  Based on what I’ve read from social media, it definitely looks like we’re about to have another extraordinary moment from the badass maid.
