Our Take

This time around, Crunchyroll felt the need to release two dubbed episodes at once with many of their shows this week with the first of the two picking up after Usato and Suzune’s unintentional camp date with the news of the two being safe from the perilous Darkness of Llinger to King Lloyd. Despite the king’s relief at their well-being, he discerns a disquieting aspect in the peculiar appearance of the monsters they encountered. In response, he dispatches Rose to investigate the area further. Rose promptly embarks on a reconnaissance mission only to stumble upon the advancing forces of the Demon Lord’s Army, gearing up for an imminent invasion but manages to delay things… Meanwhile, Usato pays a visit to the clinic managed by Orga and Ururu, joining them as they respond to an accident at the scene only to encounter a young fox girl with something important to tell him…

In the other episode, Usato remains confused by the unsettling psychic vision of the future shown to him by the mysterious beast girl Amako, Usato finds himself unable to sleep, troubled by it even as night falls. But it leaves me to wonder, why the fuck didn’t he go into detail about it with Rose? Later on, a mysterious glowing orb appears at his window, beckoning him outside. There, he encounters Kazuki who slowly begins to reveal his fears about going into the battlefield as a hero. I kinda like this, since most isekai stories would have some random young person or high schooler ready to go and excited at the idea of fighting monsters. But realistically, the average young person is gonna be scared shitless with such a burden (Shinji from Evangelion comes to mind). At the very least it’s a nice moment between the three before the next morning when they hear about the Demon Lord making his next move, while Rose gives Usato his graduation gift from her training and some stern advice for the battlefield…

Overall, both were passable episodes. They’ve set up this upcoming battle very well. Usually, we have the demon lord’s army attacking, and then they go fight. Here though it’s kind of feeling like an actual war. Characters are getting scared, and sharing those feelings with others in different ways. Especially Rose who up until this point was putting up a tough front, but the King knowing her tragic history tells us everything we need to know about the fact that Rose carries a heavy weight on her shoulders, along with the constant reminder of not repeating past mistakes, but it’s far from subtle why she hides the scar on the right side of her face. Now the question is what’s going to happen next?
