English Dub Review: The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic “Dragged into Another World!”

Overview

Based on the Japanese light novel series written by written by Kurokata and illustrated by KeG. The story follows an ordinary high school student named Ken Usato who is mistakenly suddenly summoned to another world along with his two classmates and student council members Suzune and Kazuki.

Our Take

For an average everyday student, Ken Usato comes across as harmless and unremarkable. However, his affiliation with the student council, alongside Kazuki Ryusen and Suzune Inukami, leads them into unexpected adventures. While discussing their aspirations, the trio is suddenly transported to another world, encountering a kingdom under attack and meeting King Lloyd Vulgast. The king requests them to become heroes, Shockingly, Suzune takes this a bit too well compared to the other two dudes, as he explains they were mostly brought here in an act of desperation.

At first, King Lloyd and his subjects are quick to apologize for what can be perceived as a “dick-move” for dragging 3 strangers into their war, and thanks to their resident mage Welcie, she was able to identify their hero status. However, Usato was pulled in with them on accident and isn’t acknowledged as one. But the plot begins to pick when Welcie uses her crystal ball to Identify what magic powers the three of them all have and what they can bring to the table on the battlefield with each color signifying a different magical ability. But once Usato’s magic is identified by a glowing green color, all hell breaks loose when a towering and imposing green-haired woman comes to seek Usato out…

This was one hell of a way to set up this potentially wacky, comical, and sometimes serious tone for the rest of this show. At the very least, it wasn’t boring when it attempted to set itself apart from most Isekai stories and was a bit fun in places, even if I didn’t know what to expect from Usato’s crystal ball reading. And given that we’re seeing everything through Usato’s perspective, it feels like an unraveling mystery as to why the specific magic tied with the green glow is so undervalued. Hopefully, we’ll further learn why later on, but I’m definitely hooked!
