Review: The Simpsons “McMansion & Wife”

Overview

Homer thinks he’s being tricked into buying a sports car; Lisa neutralizes Nelson after he goes on a bullying spree.

Our Take

This week’s episode of The Simpsons welcomes Rosalie Chiang as the new voice of “Hubert Wong” after previously being voiced by Tress MacNeille after a dozen or so episodes. Add in her with other featured voices used this week previously voiced by other actors, i.e. Grey DeLisle’s “Martin”, Alex Desert’s “Carl”, and Kevin Michael Richardson’s “Dr. Hibbert”, and slowly but surely a lot of the classic voice staff from the longest running sitcom in primetime is being replaced. The soul of the show is slowly being eroded away into nothingness.

Neither of the plots were anything special to write home about. Homer has been featured in a number of “money isn’t everything” premises and we’ve seen Nelson get his comeuppance for bullying more times than I can count. I did appreciate the Goodfellas homage complete with “The Crystals” soundtrack, but that was really it.

Whether or not the new voice of “Hubert” becomes a thorn in Lisa’s side for long will be interesting to see given that they eventually get married only to divorce and marry other people, though me thinking that there’s any merit to the canon of The Simpsons is silliness especially when you consider that Lisa eventually marries Nelson, which makes this episode that much more ironic, if not enjoyable.
