Review: The Patrick Star Show “Host-a-Palooza”

Overview

When Patrick gets injured, his family members take turns hosting the show.

Our Take

In what feels like a sort of a meta-commentary with the “show within a show” jokes people often make in modern comedies, Patrick’s adopted Sister Squidina attempts to take matters into her own hands in an effort to keep the rabid audiences appeased while Patrick is in a body-cast and healing. You’d think the fans would be understanding and let them take a break, but they come across as rabid and low-brow in terms of explaining to someone that their favorite actor is out of commission.

A good portion of the episode is spent on other characters doing random wacky things akin to a talent show of sorts with Squidward mostly getting the shit end of the stick which seems to be a running gag they seem to endlessly drag no matter what Spongebob story they tell outside or otherwise. Of course, all of it culminates in something where the audience participates and a semi-predictable ending.

Overall, this was a bit by the numbers with it’s setup. And while some jokes work, some fall flat with how cliche they can be. At the very least the episode was well-paced and didn’t overstay its welcome (except for the Squidward jokes) and knew how to properly end in a wacky comedic fashion.
