Review: The Smurfs “Storm Loses her Mojo/Pop Out”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Storm Loses her Mojo

Smurfblossom unknowingly takes Storm’s warrior spirit after using a spell to connect her inner warrior.

Pop Out

Gargamel casts a spell on Grouchy so that whatever he complains about appears in his hovel.

Our Take:

The first episode offers a Storm-focused plot that has her losing her warrior spirit to Blossom when Blossom uses a spellbook to connect to her inner warrior. As a result, Blossom becomes the protector of the forest and a massive bully, while Storm wound up being an anxious wimp. Much of the humor in this episode comes from Papa Smurf and the others attempting to get into the forest but repeatedly wound up getting kicked out by Blossom. Additionally, it has Storm gathering the courage to win an archery contest by shooting her arrow at Blossom’s warrior flower.

For the second episode, the plot focuses on Grouchy, a Smurf who doesn’t like everything that annoys him. His only response to anything he sees is, “Me. I don’t like…”. His personality makes good use of the episode’s story that features Gargamel placing a curse on him so that anything he hates appears in his lair. The humor is the main highlight of “Pop Out”, which sees Gargamel being tortured by random objects that Grouchy hates, except the Smurfs, especially those belonging to the ogre. Additionally, Jokey Smurf is at it once again, as he uses Grouchy’s “power” to make his own problems disappear, including Baby’s dirty diapers and dirty dishes.

Overall, both episodes are enjoyable additions to the Smurfs’ series of slapstick adventures. “Storm Loses her Mojo” is a decent episode that sees Storm gaining confidence without her warrior spirit to outsmart Blossom. However, “Pop Out” turns out to be the best of the two, with Grouchy’s dislike of everything being useful against Gargamel’s latest scheme. More importantly, that episode has some of the best slapstick moments that this newest iteration can offer.
