English Dub Review: Mieruko-chan “She Sees Real Crazy Ones”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Unlike Miko, Hana has no idea what kind of monsters she attracts. When a real crazy one starts haunting her, however, Miko decides she’s got to do something about it!

Our Take:

We’re halfway through this hauntingly humorous series. So it should come as no surprise that we’re starting to see some crazy stuff. After spending some time with Yulia last week, the episode shifts its focus back on Miko protecting Hana from creepy spirits. Although, this spirit proves to be more menacing than the tiny ones.

The story in “She Sees Real Crazy Ones” is the same as the other episodes where Miko attempts not to freak out in front of Hana yet again. The only difference is that this episode is just as insane as the immense freaky spirit who’s using Hana as its portable stove. Despite the plot not adding anything new to its formula, it’s still an enjoyable chapter that went beyond its slice of life element.

The episode spends the first half focusing on Hana trying to meet up with Miko before coming across a young boy whose dog ran off into an abandoned building. While Hana searches for the lost dog, the enormous ghost uses her life force to cook and eat the smaller ones. It’s an acceptable change of pace that sees Hana doing a good deed without Miko’s assistance. Although, her chirpy personality will highly depend on your tolerance towards her in the previous episodes.

Afterwards, the second half sees Miko taking Hana to Miketsudani Shrine to get rid of the ghost. What follows is possibly the craziest sequence I’ve ever witnessed in Mieruko-chan: a pair of shrine spirits battling the evil ghost. Okay, maybe it’s not as crazy as I make it out to be, but for a down-to-earth horror comedy centering on a teen seeing ghosts, it’s something that left me in awe.

Overall, “She Sees Real Crazy Ones” lives up to its title by providing a much scarier spirit for Miko to face. It also offered enough screen time for both Miko and Hana and enough interest in its plot to carry its formula forward. So far, I can at least say that this has been quite an experience. Regarding its blend of horror and comedy and the episode’s ending, I’m already assuming that things will only get even crazier during the show’s second half.
