English Dub Review: Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S “The World’s Only (Insert Phrase You Like Here)”

Overview

Shouta suddenly begins shutting himself up in his room. He’s pouring over a complicated grimoire in order to create a magic item as a gift for Father’s Day. Lucoa offers to help him since the task is so difficult, but he refuses and declares he must accomplish it by himself.

Meanwhile, Kobayashi comes down with a cold, causing Tohru to worry about how to take care of her. Worried about her worsening state, Tohru returns to her world in search of a cure. And finally, Ilulu notices a doll left behind within her store and decides to look for its owner when they don’t return…

Our Take

For the proceedings of this episode, much of the humor between Shouta and Lucoa’s subplot primarily comes from a translation error since in Kanji (the most popular of the 3 Japanese Alphabets), the Japanese word “Chi-Chi” is a word that refers to both “Father” and “Breasts”, hence why for most of the episode, Lucoa keeps referring Father’s Day as “Tits Day” which is weird to hear out loud in the English dub but I give points to Funimation for at least for sticking to the script.

For the other two subplots, It was sweet of Tohru to go out of her way to try and find the perfect medicine to help Kobayashi recover which lead to some hilarious consequences, but the best part of the episode that stood out to me belongs to Ilulu this time around. The determination that Ilulu showed in wanting to find the original owner of the doll, driven on by some past regrets she had when she was younger was admirable.

Overall, a very passable episode. The Shouta subplot was particularly interesting, with one of the standout scenes involving the usage of video games and Shouta expressing to his friends his problems during an online chat which felt like a relatable scenario and rarely, do people have friends who are willing to offer emotional support to some capacity. As for the other two subplots, they served their purpose in showing how capable and compassionate the people are. Plus, I liked how it portrayed the importance of having a sentimental attachment to things and did a solid job in highlighting how important dolls or toys like this can be when we grow up. To others, it might look like rubbish that should be thrown away or for someone to “grow out of”, but to this girl, it means the world to her, a clear sign of sentimental value that can’t ever be replaced.
