English Dub Review: Mother of the Goddess’ Dormitory (Uncensored): “Koushi, At a Loss/Koushi Goes Back to School”

Overview: Koushi (Brittany Karbowski) returns to his school at last and reunites with a childhood friend who is less than enthused about his lack of communication about where he has been.

Our Take: How do older sibling types prove their affection for the main protagonist? By wanting to be called big sister and doing sisterly things of course. Goddess Dormitory putts its way along the same mini golf course you have probably seen more than one time or another. And it really takes the short route. The first half is really just the girls groping Koushi in one way or another proving their sisterliness, because there really is no better way, right? This has to be the quintessential element of ecchi but this time applied to more than one character and features the basic over-sentimental writing that you see in other anime with similar sibling relationship fill-ins. If the story must go down this route, hopefully it’ll find a way to show the different qualities that each respective girl has rather than take this cheap shortcut.

Although, this episode is not without it’s saving grace in that of the relationship that is established between Koushi and his childhood friend, Sutea Kouroya. What struck me the most about their friendship and Sutea’s romantic feelings for Koushi was that it was founded on something that felt more genuine than the cliché one act of kindness, as sweet as it was in how he chilled his hands to touch her because of her illness regarding heat. It was Koushi’s consistency of his actions thereafter that helped solidified it. It’s also nice that there are meaningful characters and interactions outside of the girls in the goddess dormitory. Besides that, Sutea really is the classic Tsundere. Although with that being said, at the very least, she seems a bit less resistant to reveal her feelings than others I’ve seen, so that’s refreshing and could lead to some actual development in the romance department. Sutea and Koushi have a great rapport nonetheless, albeit a paint by numbers one, with him being victim to her overbearing violent tendencies due to her shyness along with her moments of vulnerability that are emotional and heartfelt. With Sutea just now meeting the girls at the dorm, the stage set is set for more fun comedic and raunchy hijinks. If only we could get less stinted and more original development, like that of the second episode, for the girls along with more earnest cultivation of Sutea and Koushi’s bond.
