English Dub Review: Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Golden Wind: “Six Bullets Appears, Part 2”

(Possible Spoilers Below)

In a flashback, we learn that long before Bruno’s recruitment, Guido Mista started off as a carefree young thug who hung around the streets and never tried to complicate things by living a simple life. That is until one day at the age of 17 Guido was impulsively thrown into a dangerous situation without batting an eye. During the chaos of that moment, an act of pure luck happened when some unrepentant assholes attempted to gun him down, only for those bullets to be whizzing past him as he casually loads the gun up and shoots 4 perfect shots even before he developed Stand Powers to use in a gunfight. And out of self-defense, committed his first series of kills that ended his simple life and in theory, could’ve been the reason why he despises the number 4 so much aside from Japanese superstition.

Back to the present on the island of Capri, Guido is actively pursuing one of the other two assailants who attempted to ambush Bruno’s gang by hanging onto the truck traveling up a mountain and is confronted by Sale and his Stand which is strangely called “Arts & Crafts”. Sale’s Stand allows him to affix objects and people in place thereby making them immovable easy targets, which also manages to stop a bullet fired by Guido from penetrating his skull. Guido then uses his Six Bullets Stand to knock Sale off the truck, however in a creatively clever scene, Sale catches up to Guido and hits him with one of his own bullets.

As Sale attempts to finish off Guido off with one final bullet, Guido’s stand does something unthinkably awesome and is able to turn his most dire situation around in a very creative and imaginative way to permanently dispatch him. Guido then has the truck driver return him to the Marina where he enters the watch-house with the bleeding Sale, but the episode ends when Giorno attempting in an effort to catch up to Guido by forcing the same truck driver back up the mountain to find him.

Our Take

By far, this was one of the best action scenes in Part 5. We also saw a little glimpse into Guido’s past, and with the recent introduction of Bruno’s Passione gang, despite how short his backstory was, it got the point across that Guido as a character may have come across as kinda weird, but is not somebody evil. The situation that changed his life showed that he kinda had a sense of justice before becoming a gangster, just like Abbacchio yet different circumstances.

From the Stand battle, Guido’s Six-Bullets remains one of the most intriguing and awesome, even if it does not look as spectacular as many other Stands. Them bullets’ crew is great each member has its own personality. I also liked the mind games in combination with the fact that we had several gore-like scenes that corresponded with the rising tension between Mista and his opponent during their duel on the top of a moving truck mid-battle.

It’s easy to assume we are slowly learning the backstories of every Passione member which progressively adds a level of intrigue and likability to each character and given the track record of Jojo’s creator, Hikohiro Araki, this is both a signature style and level of high quality that I’ll never get tired of coming back to.
