Report: “BoJack Horseman” Creator Speaks Out On Show’s Cancellation

The Jewish Community Center of San Francisco was host to a Q&A with BoJack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg. No photos or videos were allowed at the event, but a fan account of Raph being asked about why the hell the show was being canceled after six seasons came up. Turns out, the show was always going to end, it was just a matter of when. Here’s the report of Raphael’s answer:

When they delivered the first season of BoJack, Raphael got some notes from Netflix saying that maybe they shouldn’t wrap things up so much. That maybe they could leave some things more open, which he took as a good sign that they would get renewed, which we all know now happened then and kept happening for many more times. Well, at some point, during these years that Raphael has been delivering season after season to Netflix, he got to them and asked: “Hey, could you, maybe, just give me a heads up in case I should, you know, stop leaving things open for what’s to come?” and they said, “Sure!”. So when Netflix ordered Season 6, they honored their agreement and said, “Heeeey, remember that time you asked us to say you should stop leaving things open? Well, this is now. Wrap it up.” So, Even though Raphael could keep doing BoJack, Netflix was the one who pulled the plug (hence Aaron Paul’s tweet). BUT, they were decent enough to tell him BEFORE they started producing this season, which, honestly, from what we’ve seen Netflix do with other shows, was actually a very respectful move and maybe the reason why Raphael didn’t want to say anything about this, because, not many showrunners got to end as he did. So, and I quote him here, “there’s no need to campaign for a Season 7 or anything, there’s no more story after that”.

A specific reason for the show’s cancellation was never given, though if it’s coming from Netflix, we have an idea. In any event, the first half of BoJack Horseman’s final season debuts October 25th on Netflix.

In BoJack Horseman, Will Arnett voices BoJack, the failed legendary 90’s sitcom star from the favorite family sitcom Horsin’ Around, who has been trying to find his way through a muddle of self-loathing, whisky and failed relationships. Now, in the presence of his human sidekick Todd (Aaron Paul) and his feline agent and ex-paramour Princess Carolyn (Amy Sedaris), BoJack is primed for his comeback…
