English Dub Review: Dragon Ball Super ”Zamasu and Black: The Duo’s Mystery Deepens“

Worst apprentice ever!

Overview (Spoilers Below)

Zamasu is bullying the shit out of Zuno for info regarding the Super Dragon Balls, but is told by Zuno to wait for one year to use them again due to Beerus previously using them. In response to this, Zamasu demands the current locations of every Super Dragon Ball, along with every piece of info there is to know about Goku. While this is going on, Goku, Trunks and Vegeta are back in the present but are in bad shape from the Ass kicking they got from Future Zamasu and Goku Black which could’ve been avoided if Goku didn’t make the careless mistake of forgetting to bring the Senzu Beans with them before beforehand much to Bulma’s irritation. Thankfully, all of them have recovered thanks to the senzu beans.

At this point from what they and by extension the audience can gather, Zamasu has achieved “God Mode” in the future, but in an effort to be a match against them, Goku comes up with a solution which sounds cool on paper but dumb in execution: accumulate an infinite supply of senzu beans in order to defeat Goku Black and Zamasu but theoretically, gathering a substantial amount is seemingly impossible. Just as Future Trunks explains to Mai that her future-self is alive, The Supreme Kai, Beerus and Whis land on Earth with news in regards to Zamasu’s interrogation scene from earlier, while Vegeta tells them about their defeat from Goku Black and an Immortal Zamasu. Whis then explains that Zamasu may have been humbled after sparring with Goku, but the experience has made him grow curious yet disgusted that such a mortal could achieve higher levels of strength, but they come to the possible conclusion that Zamasu could’ve used the Super Dragon Balls to wish for a powerful ally to enforce his twisted form of “Justice” to the universe.

While the episode does spend most of it’s running time throwing possible theories around, the bigger question they keep asking themselves is why Goku Black has the same energy-signature as Zamasu? But it’s easy to assume that Zamasu may have either waited another year to make a second wish to achieve immortality or used the Time Rings to speed up the process of waiting since they only a take a year to be usable again which could also explain how the two murderous a-holes may have ended up in the dystopian timeline of Future Trunks. (For those who don’t remember, the Time Travel rules of Dragonball support the “alternate timeline” theory, where it’s two separate outcomes split into two different timelines unlike Back to the Future’s rules where it’s one stream of time that can easily be changed if the past or present is altered in some way.) As Whis & Future Trunks theorize that Gowasu could’ve been later killed & dethroned by Zamasu in order to get his time rings, the episode ends on an unsettling cliffhanger when Beerus Whis and Goku go to Universe 10 to warn Gowasu about what’s going to happen seconds before Zamasu walks in with Tea.

Our Take.

A much needed informative episode. Whis, Beerus and Bulma kinda stole the show while giving proper breathing room after Goku, Vegeta and Future Trunks’s intense battle in the future. They kept dropping lots of info and plausible theories such as Zamasu using the time rings to go into the future to use the Super Dragonballs, as he comes off as very impatient in his goals.

Overall, while the episode lacked any sort of action, it still succeeded to be important enough by offering possible answers in regards to Zamasu’s methods but doesn’t reveal too much to keep the sense of mystery this arc going as we’re still wondering who the fuck Goku Black is supposed to be.

Whatever happens next, I’m hooked enough to find out!
