English Dub Review: Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders “Justice, Part 2”

Peter Falk would’ve been proud of this episode.

Overview (Spoilers Below)

As Polnareff hears the gunfire echoing in the hall after Enyaba punished Hol Horse, she quickly attempts to hide his body from Polnareff to avoid being caught, leading to a very comical scene that excels in tension and dark humor as Polnareff meets Enyaba and shows his appreciation of her “hospitality” with a tame back massage while Enyaba struggles to suppress her rage which is hilarious yet fucked up on her end because realistically, wouldn’t you be on-edge from getting a massage by someone who killed your son? However, Hol Horse who’s somehow survived after being shot in the face alerts Polnareff of an oncoming attack from Enyaba, who proceeds to use her Justice fog to control the dead townspeople who behave like running zombies. While being chased, Polnareff sticks it to Hol Horse’s pleads for help by reminding him of his involvement with Avdol’s death.

Retreating to a nearby bathroom to hide from danger, Polnareff is hit by a surprise attack from the bathroom door’s keyhole, allowing Enyaba’s Justice Stand to take control of his tongue which is possibly one of the most disturbing moments on the show as Enyaba even goes as far as to make Polnareff lick a toilet in humiliation. The animation in this scene is both wince-worthy and off the wall but that’s to be expected when you have the words “Bizarre Adventure” in your title. When Enyaba is approached by Jotaro who’s suspected something off about her for quite sometime, he calls her out on her bullshit by pointing out that she’s been referring to him by his real name, because in a clever twist, Team Joestar used false names in advance when signing the hotel guestbook earlier and even admits to being a fan of Columbo as a child which influenced his sharp detective skills.

During a well-paced fight scene between Jotaro and Enyaba’s zombies, one of them manages to inflict a wound on Jotaro’s left-leg putting him at a disadvantage. As Jotaro struggles to lay a physical attack against Enyaba’s stand, he finally manages to overcome Justice’s fog-like form by having Star Platinum inhale it, suffocating Enyaba until she passes out. The next day as they open the door, the village is revealed to have been a cemetery that was controlled by Enyaba’s Fog-Stand the whole time. As Jotaro suggests they take Enyba with them for interrogation when they get to the next town, The episode ends in cliffhanger fashion when Polnareff discovers that Hol Horse stole their Jeep and while ditching Team Joestar, he loudly tells them to “put a bullet between Enyaba’s eyes” while they still can.

Our Take

This episode was easily just as entertaining as the last in a number of ways but I couldn’t help but wince at a few scenes. From Polnareff unintentionally pouring salt on Enyaba’s emotional wounds for killing her despicable son Centerfold, to Enyaba forcibly making Polnareff lick a toilet. Thankfully, the animators knew what not to show because sometimes the worst horror is what you don’t see. The display of Jotaro’s detective skills that made Enyaba lose her cool was easily my favorite scene and I also give massive props to the series creator Hirohiko Araki for the Columbo reference.

Now that Team Joestar doesn’t have a car, It’s gonna be a long walk before they get to the next town but who knows what other dangers they’ll encounter on their journey.
