G’s Review: South Park Last of the Meheecans

Well it looks like we can leave the last 2 episodes behind as South
Park seems to have returned to its roots. Since the mid season finale
and then again with last week’s premiere the future of South Park was
in general disarray. Stan’s growing depression has led to a drinking
problem but it wasn’t certain if this would be a continuing plot line
or just a break from reality. It’s not like this would be uncommon
since after all (a) it is a cartoon and (b) Kenny has died close to
100 times…

Yet it only took a minute into “The Last of The Meheecans” for our
questions (and some hopes) to be answered. Not only is Stan back to
his old self, but Cartman has also returned to his place as the
outcast. Matt and Trey weren’t really going to force us into watching
a show where Kyle and Cartman are actual friends right?

We open with the kids playing perhaps a modern day version of Cowboys
and Indians except this is the twisted version called Border Patrol
and Meheecans. Cartman fits perfectly into the enforcer role on the
Patrol side dialing back to the days of “respect my authoritah” and
Stan, Kyle, and Kenny provide some laughs in their Mexican wardrobe.

But “The Last of The Meheecans” was great for its inclusion of Butters
aptly named Mantequilla, which means Butter in Spanish. After he is
told to split off on his own during the game, Butters gets lost
resulting in him getting taken in by a family offering him a place to
live instead of getting sent back to Mexico.

From there the episode unfolds as a pseudo commentary on the state of
the US economy as Butters and other (actual) Mexicans decide to flee
the US in favor of returning to Mexico. This reverse immigration
crisis is seen as a threat to the US Border Patrol, and in order to
fix it they need to focus on keeping the Mexicans in rather than out.

On the South Park scale it was an average episode which is still
funnier than most cartoons in my opinion. And of course any episode
that features Butters and has a Randy Marsh appearance is going to get
at least one thumb up. Viva La Mantequilla!
