OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)Chris deals with being overshadowed by his younger brother Drew, and later has a chance encounter with a Klansmen.OUR TAKEWe got another two-fer of everybody still hating young Chris Rock. It’s a wonder he had any self-esteem by the time he was an adult…oh wait, he’s a comedian, he has no self-esteem. But as it turns out, having no self-esteem can lead to making some pretty decent animated comedies like this one we’re talking about here! And one thing I gotta say to this show’s credit is that it makes sure that all of the principal cast, Chris’s family, get stuff to do. Obviously Chris is the main focus and gets the A plot of each episode so far, but we also get to see his dad Julius dealing with the conundrum of making adult friends at work (not something I’ve had an issue with personally but one I can definitely understand other people having, especially as they get even older). We get stuff about Tonya seeming the most responsible but finding herself making mistakes when misplacing keys and getting her first crush, or Rochelle needing to get a job for once and then teaching Chris about the challenges he’ll face while being Black. Drew is kind of an outlier right now since all the key plots he’s been in (in this revival series anyway) have been closely related to Chris, but I’m sure he’s due for a focus episode of his own at some point in this ten episode season. The variety of topics that these plots get into are also pretty widely varied, and feel mostly unique to each character. A Rochelle plot is not a Tonya plot is not a Julius plot and so on and so forth. I don’t know how many of the writers they got back from the old show for this, but the ones they have currently clearly are pretty well studied in how to make solid and distinct plots for each episode that don’t feel dry or over done. That said, this show is nothing revolutionary or anything, but it is easy to digest, the character designs aren’t anything special, but not hard to look at. If these aren’t the same writers, they’re at least people who care enough about how the old show used to do things that they can effectively replicate it in a similar but different medium.
