English Dub Review: The Unwanted Undead Adventurer “The Garden Labyrinth”

Overview (Spoilers Below): Rentt makes his way through a complex maze, and its owner gives him his choice of magic item as a reward.

Our Take: Rentt has gotten himself into a pickle yet again as we’re nearing the end of the season.  In an attempt to visit the Latour family, Rentt goes through a nearly impossible maze that constantly changes.  It’s illogical, but it is a fantasy anime, after all.  Thankfully, Rentt took the hint about not relying on the sun to heart, thanks to a young magic item collector named Laura, leading him to realize that the maze is teleporting him around.  After finally being free from the magical labyrinth, Rentt discovers that Laura is also the head of the Latour family.  This also leads to him gaining a mana-controlled airship model as a reward, although its mana consumption can be a disadvantage to its use. This episode serves as a conclusion to Rentt’s mini-arc involving his encounter with the Latour family, continuing to deviate from the “kidnapping adventurers” scenario introduced in “Magical Contract”.  However, Laura’s collection of magic items intrigues me despite also resulting in Rentt battling a golem he accidentally activated.  More importantly, it doesn’t stray far from Rentt’s eagerness to evolve, mainly from his desire to drink a vial of vampire blood he received from Laura.  Unsurprisingly, this also raises Lorraine’s concerns, as drinking vampire blood could transform Rentt into a vampire himself or kill him, even though it’s the only solution for him to become a Mythril-class adventurer.  The last question remaining this season is why he wants to be one in the first place.  From the looks of it, we may get that answer in next week’s finale.
