English Dub Review: Rick and Morty: The Anime “Feel Don’t Think“

Overview

As the Smith family prepares for a fight, Rick reveals a hidden truth to Morty.

Our Take

Comedy has to be the hardest thing to translate across the world and even here in the United States. Comedy from anime is even trickier because anime is typically produced and dubbed in Japanese before being translated into English so some of the comedic nuances that feel right at home here in the States can often be lost in translation. So called “comedy anime” rarely even works in the United States, even if it’s dubbed in English, so typically the comedic elements have to rely on another foothold to really have any chance be it by way of romance, horror, or in this case, sci-fi.

With that said, this week’s episode of Rick and Morty: The Anime was hysterical. The entire battle with the Galactic Federation is just one big romp and Jerry, who has been noticeably missing the last couple of weeks, is just as dopey as ever and possibly even more anemic than the OG series. Additionally, the animation production sequences during the fight scenes were very well-done and Takashi Sano and Studio Deen deserve their flowers for the pace those sequences had.

The plot might be a bit filler with no real movement with a lot of discussion on things that have to be done and no real time on seeing those things coming to fruition, but overall I think Rick and Morty: The Anime did a decent job of setting the table for what will be the penultimate episode of the show’s first season. If this series can stick the landing, I think it’s safe to say that this show should not only stay, but also be the proper series moving forward.
