English Dub Review: My Instant Death Ability is Overpowered “You Should Use Your Power Any Way You Want”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
Yogiri and his friends go off script during the Sage Candidate Selection Battle to lure Sion out.  Yogiri has a mission: find out how to return to his home world.

Our Take:
The previous episode literally ended with a bang, as a mysterious Annihilation Bomb caught Yogiri and the others by surprise.  But, as you can see in the season finale, they survived, except for everything else.  Admittedly, that would’ve been a pretty despicable cliffhanger for the show if they decided to end the first season like that.  But it would also be a bit better than what we got instead.
Following their survival, Yogiri, Tomochika, and the others finally confront Ayaka Shinozaki, who has transformed into a dragon with her “Dragon Heal” magic.  However, without much of a confrontation, Yogiri immediately used his ability to kill her.  If that’s not anticlimactic enough, try adding that Mana, the supposed big bad of the season besides Sion, easily fell victim to Yogiri’s instant death gift.  But, if there’s one good thing I could say about Yogiri’s ability, it’s that he now learns how to kill people’s body parts, which is useful for interrogating Sion.  By the way, Mana supposedly killed Sion, so that’s also one less problem to worry about.
Unfortunately, even with Ayaka, Sion, and Mana out of the picture, there’s still the matter of Yogiri and the others returning home.  To do that, Yogiri and the others, along with Risley, Theodisia, and her sister, must collect the philosopher’s stones from other sages to provide a stronger link between the real world and the isekai realm.  This will serve as the premise for the show’s second season, although based on my experience, I wouldn’t be sad if it didn’t happen.  It’s no surprise that the season finale lacked any real stakes and fun like the previous episodes, mainly due to Yogiri’s OP ability being repetitive and dull.  While it’s not without some tolerable visuals, the show just isn’t my cup of tea regarding its humor and storyline.  I’ll explain further in my upcoming season review, but until then, I will say that this is one isekai world I won’t return to anytime soon.
