English Dub Review: Jellyfish Can’t Swim in the Night “Kiui Watase”

Overview

Mahiru asks a VTuber friend for help and, on the surface, Kiui radiates heroic confidence. But Kiui is hiding something beneath a digital mask.

Our Take

In this episode, the group welcomes Kiui (pronounced “Kiwi”) who is a talented VTuber, who brings her unique energy and skills to their growing team. Kiui as a character is dealing with personal struggles, particularly social anxiety, which makes it difficult for her to connect with the world outside her online persona. Despite her challenges, she steps in to help the group with video production, deepening her bond with Mahiru, who also faces her insecurities.

The episode blends humor and touching moments as the group begins to find its rhythm. Aside from a subplot that involves Mahiru partaking in a school play that has sort of a payoff later on, much of the episode delves into the emotional challenges Kiui faces, showing how her online life provides a sense of comfort and escapism which highlights the occasional downsides that come with that. Yet her friendship with Mahiru is crucial in potentially helping her overcome these obstacles.

Overall, this episode managed to top the previous one in humor with heartfelt moments, giving us a deeper look into the characters and their evolving relationships. With the full team in place, I’m curious to see what direction it will take them next!
