Review: RICK AND MORTY: RICK OR TREAT HALLOWEEN SPECIAL #1

Overview

Rick is hard at work in the garage, but Morty just won’t stop yapping, so he opens up a portal and brings in a weird, gothy-looking girl named Lil Wigsley. Rick explains that Lil Wigsley will tell Morty stories if he’ll shut up and listen—but these aren’t just any old stories. They’re horrifically banal, but it soon becomes clear that Rick and Sister Lil Wigsley’s intent to distract Morty is more terrifying than the tepid tales they’ve been spinning!

Our Take

Because of The Simpsons, pretty much animated sitcom has adopted the whole yearly anthology bit that typically features parodies of movies, TV shows, and other realms of pop culture phenomenon. Rick and Morty’s TV series is no exception with the Interdimensional Cable sagas that have since seen their way into the print sectors as well, and here we get a 64-page $10 super-sized Rick and Morty Halloween special that has the NERVE to bring with it an anthology of spooky stories inspired by the series. Did it work? Begrudgingly I have to admit….YES!

If you are a long-time fan of Rick and Morty you are going to love the cameos that happen all over the place, but BROCKTON MCKINNEY’s dialogue is absolutely fantastic in this issue. For starters, the entire through plot is fantastically well-written and one of the better print releases Oni Press has done for Rick and Morty. Add in the fact that Mckinney helps make for hysterical laugh-out-loud one-liners, and you’ve got yourself a winner. Marc Ellerby’s art helps make this super-sized issue so funny that I think if this was adapted into an animated episode during the show’s heyday (all seasons before season seven), that RICK AND MORTY: RICK OR TREAT HALLOWEEN SPECIAL #1 could’ve fit right in with any one of the Emmy-winning seasons that the series used to enjoy.

You may think the $10 price tag may be a bit steep, but the comics pages DO come up with cut-out finger puppets which may or may not be real, but look real enough for me, so I’m gonna try and do a project this afternoon.
