Review: Bob’s Burgers “The Tina Table: The Tables Have Tina-Ed”

Overview

Tina attempts to save her school news segment by interviewing Mr. Frond about his revolutionary new computer game; Bob and Linda entertain Teddy by making up the plots to popular horror movies they haven’t seen.

Our Take

After waiting seven whole days since the season 14 finale of Bob’s Burgers, season 15 kicks off for FOX with a theme that kind of continues the showbiz theme that The Simpsons did earlier in the evening. For starters, Tina learns all about telling the truth no matter what whilst Teddy learns that you shouldn’t listen to your friends about movies you want to see and instead just go see them yourself.

For my money, both plots could potentially be allegories for internet noise, with even the small subplot of Mr. Frond’s life lessons potentially being a send up of internet horoscopes, delivered the classic Bob’s Burgers way. The Greg Thompson-written script is laden with recurring cast that we haven’t seen in a while like Gaffigan’s take on “Henry” which always gives me a chuckle thanks to the bull-frog like delivery of Henry’s lines and the return of Will Forte’s “Mr. Grant” for those who may be missing Will’s more prominent role in The Great North as “Beef”.

I also really enjoyed the aesthetic of the cutaway horror shorts as Bob and Linda were telling their scary stories, and I gotta tell ya, I think this whole premise could’ve been the new yearly Halloween anthology series because we’re kind of getting hints of the more grim and macabre origins of the Bob’s Burgers franchise coupled with an art aesthetic that’s hysterical. Loren Bouchard has promised that a dollhouse murder mystery will be the basis for the real Halloween episode of Bob’s Burgers so now I’m going to be curious to see if THAT episode will be better than this.

In any event, Bob’s Burgers kicks off the new season with a really well-done episode. But, not too well-done, with slight pink in the center…the way I like it.
