Each song was rated on metrics including ‘energy,’ ‘dance,’ ‘loud,’ and ‘valence,’ each with a maximum score of 100, except for BPM, which had a maximum score of 1,000. These ratings were then normalized and scored according to the weighting table above.

Futurama’s energetic theme music makes it the most distracting TV show to have on in the background while working.

Animated shows like Attack on Titan dominate the list due to their focus-breaking soundtracks. Shows with upbeat, high-BPM songs, such as Rick and Morty also rank highly for their ability to distract people from work.

A new study has revealed that Futurama is the worst TV show to play for distraction-free work.

The study, conducted by KingCasinoBonus.com, analyzed the opening credit music from 168 popular TV shows across various genres. Using data on factors such as BPM (beats per minute), energy, loudness, and danceability, each song was given an index score out of a maximum of 100 points.

The shows were ranked based on how likely their theme songs were to break someone’s focus while working. Animated show categories featured prominently in the rankings, often due to their energetic soundtracks.

With an overall index score of 72.54, Futurama tops the list. The fast BPM of 120 and high energy level of 99 make it one of the most distracting shows to have in the background while trying to concentrate. Its animated sci-fi setting combined with loud, catchy background music makes it hard to ignore, continuously pulling listeners’ attention away from work.

Ranking second through fourth place are Attack on Titan, Arcane, and Rick and Morty.

Each song was rated on metrics including ‘energy,’ ‘dance,’ ‘loud,’ and ‘valence,’ each with a maximum score of 100, except for BPM, which had a maximum score of 1,000. These ratings were then normalized and scored according to the weighting table above.

Methodology:

1. Seed list creation: A seed list of TV shows was sourced from Netflix, Flixpatrol, along with IMDb’s advanced search, which used the following criteria:

  • TV shows and TV miniseries released after January 1994.
  • An IMDb rating of 7.5 or higher.
  • A minimum of 200,000 total user ratings.

2. Show selection and exclusions: This process identified a collection of the most popular and beloved TV shows from the last few decades. Children’s shows and shows older than 10 years were removed from the initial list, this was to focus on adult-targeted content relevant to background streaming during work.

3. Final list of 168 shows: The final curated list consisted of 168 TV shows spanning various genres, including animated, sci-fi, superhero, drama, and more.

4. Song analysis: The theme songs of the remaining shows were analyzed using the following metrics, each given a specific weighting.

5. Score calculation: An overall score was calculated for each show based on the weighted metrics, with a maximum possible score of 100. The shows were then ranked from most to least distracting based on their overall scores.
