English Dub Review: Wistoria: Wand and Sword “Praxis Begins”

Overview (Spoilers Below): The all-student praxis begins.  Lihanna, Wignall, Julius, Sion, and Will, with Colette tagging along, dive into the dungeon together.  Though Will’s usefulness is questioned, they push forward to floor ten and their primary target—the Luminous Naberus.

Our Take: The praxis is nothing like the school festival due to one particular reason: people can die.  Fortunately, Will and Colette have a powerful enough team consisting of the academy’s top students (and Sion) to survive the event.  That is if they can actually work together.  Despite Will’s intellect and sword skills, he’s unable to use them because his other partners keep defeating the monsters before he can act, resulting in them doubting his usefulness as a “shield”.  Well, maybe if those magical asshats would allow him to actually do something, they wouldn’t be in that position!  But that is the least of Will’s problems when their encounter with the tenth-floor boss separates the party, landing themselves on the 11th floor. However, that’s not even the worst part.  The two mages that appeared at the end of the previous episode, Marze and Headless, show up to rain on the praxis’s parade.  If you’ve seen the last episode, you’d already know how ruthless these mages can be, as they kill without mercy.  If “Praxis Begins” is any indication, they could serve as formidable foes for only Will to handle in the remaining episodes.  But, of course, he’ll first have to deal with Wignall, who begins to doubt his own powers compared to Will’s non-magic skills after being saved by him.  Is it safe to say that the mages are the useless ones because of how poorly they have treated Will yet? The episode further demonstrates Will’s confidence and experience with dungeon monsters, which help compensate for his lack of magic.  While he can be timid sometimes, Will’s perseverance helps him stand up to his oppressors and master his intellect and skills outside his spells.  More importantly, it showcases a more sensitive side of Wignall, as he was bullied for being inferior to his elf clan when he was a child.  It looks like Wignall and Will may have found something in common, but will that be enough to escape the hazardous 11th floor?
