English Dub Review: Tower of God “One-Winged Devil”

Overview:

Kang Horyang shares his past with his teammates and asks Viole about the source of his power.

Our Take:

I know it’s a trope in anime for backstories to be sad but it feels like the last few episodes have been nothing but sad backstories. Horyang is the one we get this week and surprise surprise it’s a bad one. The tower is a weird place to live as it is but there are some floors of the tower where the population is heavily regulated. Only certain people are supposed to be procreating and as you can guess this won’t stop people from… umm… well… procreating. On those floors, when kids who aren’t supposed to exist are born they get sold to unsavory people and most times become experiments and made into living weapons. Horyang and his friend were two of these kids and now he’s going on his own to find him even though his friends are willing to help.

The “found family” trope is one I like a lot. So while I wish Horyang would trust in his newfound family to help I understand why he is making the choice he is. He has come to realize they mean a lot to him and knows that he might be walking into a trap and doesn’t want to endanger them unnecessarily. I didn’t like how Viole lied and said he was staying outside longer but I think the group will find out soon enough.
