English Dub Review: The Unwanted Undead Adventurer “A New Weapon and Power”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
Rentt learns of a powerful new technique that might be the key to reaching Mythril class, but to use it, he’ll need high-quality equipment.  The only problem is how to make money while lying low from the guild…

Our Take:
Rentt is one step closer to achieving his dream of becoming a Mythril-class adventurer.  Unfortunately, the accusations of him being the kidnapper of rookie adventurers put a major damper on his quest.  As a result, Rentt chose not to visit his guild for a while until he could clear his name.  However, this also means he won’t be making enough money to buy enough high-quality equipment to learn a powerful yet risky technique known as Mana-Spirit Fusion.
Thankfully, his luck turns around thanks to Ryuntus, who offers him a job at Tottsu village, which is not associated with the guild.  This job lands him at the center of a village’s sacrificial ceremony, where they sacrifice young girls to prevent the Lord of the Lake, a threatening kraken, from destroying the town.  That includes Ryuntus’s younger sister, Amiris, who’s willing to give her life to save her home despite what her brother thinks.  However, it turns out that the whole “Lake Lord” legend is actually an illusion spell cast by a couple of traders to sell the girls to slavery.  While the traders are responsible for the kidnapping, they’re not the real suspects of the adventurers’ disappearances, as Rentt concluded.
“A New Weapon and Power” is best described as a small yet diverting side quest amid Rentt’s main journey to become a Mythril-class adventurer.  It may not add much to the season’s plot, but it’s undoubtedly a nice breather from the protagonist exploring the labyrinths so much.  That’s not to say they’re not enjoyable, as they have a few merits to make the show tolerable.  It’s just that a little variety in Rentt’s missions wouldn’t hurt to maintain my interest in its formula.  From the looks of its remaining episodes, it looks like that could continue while Rentt’s accusations get cleared up.
