English Dub Review: No Longer Allowed in Another World “Will You Sentence Me to Death Again?”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Matilda and Sensei combine abilities to defeat Kaibara, then continue on their journey.

OUR TAKE

And that’s a wrap on this brief Tama/Matilda detour, with some interesting details learned about both her backstory and Sensei’s abilities. Seems Matilda (I might as well call her that for the remainder of the series since it’s her real name, unless the characters go back to calling her Tama) had an older brother who was the proper heir intended to take over for the king, but he died and this caused a rift in her relationship with her father. Now, thanks to Sensei’s Storyteller ability, it seems she has unlocked some “Divine Beast” abilities that she had apparently been repressing, which I guess makes her a more suitable heir to her kingdom or something? Like yay, good for her, I suppose. It’s certainly a cool enough looking attack and everything on this plotline feels resolved sufficiently, I guess I’ve just seen better. Still, this is fine for what it needs to be and she still gets to remain with the group at the end of it, so it all works out. More interesting to me is that this reveals more about Sensei’s “Storyteller” ability and that it doesn’t JUST send other-worlder’s back to their own worlds but can also power people up if he sees a good narrative in them, which I guess makes him a bard of some kind.

Kaibara’s backstory reveal wasn’t exactly a big turning point for his character, and if anything it’s just a sign he was always a horrible sadistic sociopath long before he got to this fantasy world. I suppose that tracks since not every bad guy is going to have a relatable motivation like Suzuki getting back at people for the bullying he suffered, and maybe that’s why Kaibara was killed instead of sent back. I mean, he also probably wasn’t sent back because he ingested part of the Dark King which makes him mutate at the end, which then leads to him being killed by Waldelia, who continues to have ambiguous alignment at the moment. Still, that’s one of these sins down and six to go, with only five episodes left in this season. I’m sure we’ll probably get a good look at least a few more of them, if not all of the remaining ones, though I can only expect we’ll see one or two get a proper fight in. I guess we’ll find out for sure in the coming weeks!
