English Dub Review: Fairy Tail : 100 Years Quest “Wraith, the Spirit Dragon”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Natsu, Ezra, Wendy, and Lucy’s battles continue, with Natsu facing Wraith, a new Diabolos member who can remove people’s souls from their bodies.

OUR TAKE

More of the same from the past couple weeks, so not a whole lot of new stuff to report. Really, the only major thing is that Natsu fights a Dragon Slayer who can only be seen BY other Dragon Slayers, and can both remove people’s souls and place his own in their bodies regardless of if they have one. Oh yeah, and apparently this guy, Wraith, is a ghost who can’t rest until he finds his killer. This is followed by Natsu having a bit of a near death experience where he goes to…heaven, possibly? He talks with few characters who I never really got to know during the parts I actually watched from the original series, but I do at least know that one is Igneel, the dragon who raised Natsu (and biological father of one of the Dragon Gods they’re hunting, not sure why Natsu didn’t ask about that), one is Zeref, Natsu’s childhood friend who gained the power of an ancient god, and the third is Mavis Vermillion who was the very first Guild Master of Fairy Tail. And I guess the two of them were romantically involved before they died and somehow had…children in the afterlife? So, are these kids…going to live their lives already dead?

Weird questions aside, the main purpose of this is to give Natsu a pep talk so he can gain the ability to fight without his body, which is useful for the sole purpose of fighting this one guy, Wraith. It also doesn’t really feel like some big example of how far Natsu’s come to gain this new ability, more like just a convenient way for him to overcome this one specific battle, which I honestly don’t see mattering much past the next few episodes at most, as Wraith has now possessed Makarov, the second Fairy Tail Guild Master who has gotten even older since the main show but is still pretty dang strong. Beyond that, the other kinda important update is that Lucy seems to be turning the tide in battling the white haired siblings, while Erza and Wendy are just kinda…doing okay? Basically what I’m saying is that these fights are getting kinda boring and I’d like it if we moved onto the next part involving Aldoron. But I suppose we gotta get through more shenanigans before some real plot progression can occur, which sounds pretty on point for this series.
