English Dub Review: Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest “Whiteout”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Natsu’s team face off against their mind controlled guildmates while Touka goes for the five orbs containing Aldoron’s power across the city.

OUR TAKE

It looks like the Touka and/or White Mage stuff has officially come into opposition with the main plot, which is probably good timing now that we’re in an arc where the main goal is protecting something that is literally the city itself. Yes, unlike Mercphobia who had a human vessel to, ya know, be a character through, Aldoron is pretty much just the city they’re in, giving him more of a passive role. However, he’s still in danger of being attacked and sealed, as we see that Touka knows which places to target in order to take his power, which I guess kind of settles whatever moral or philosophical debate the group may have been starting to have about what to do with him. But maybe we’ll find a way for Aldoron to communicate with people and it’ll turn out he’s actually a major asshole who needs to be killed anyway? You never know, though then again I don’t think I can say if this is where the Touka and/or White Mage stuff is going to really come to a head. If her goal is to seal all give Dragon Gods, and there’s two more we haven’t seen yet, I’m sure she’ll be involved in that somehow.

As for what actually happens in the episode itself, the only big draw to it is that each member of Natsu’s team ends up facing a collection of other Fairy Tail members who they know personally or have some kind of pre-existing relationship with. Natsu fights against Gajeel since they’re bother Dragon Slayers (and their cat partners do the same), Lucy fights the sibling trio of Mirajane, Elfman, and Lisanna, and Gray goes up against the Lightning Tribe whom he faced a long time ago while also needing to protect a powerless Juvia. And maybe I lost track of something but I’m not sure why Erza isn’t fighting? To be frank, there’s a lot to keep track of in this show and I’m sure most things will get explained or resolved eventually, so for now I’m just gonna let it do its thing and see where that goes, even if I’m not sure having the main characters fight mind controlled friends is really the most inspired choice. We do see some neat new attacks from Lucy and maybe we’ll see some from Gray next episode, but for now it’s just…fine, and maybe that’s all it needs to be right now.
