OUR TAKE

And so ends the first arc of this new Fairy Tail show, with the first of the five dragons fully sealed, thankfully without any bloodshed required. Mercphobia gets to live out the rest of his days as some dude with weird horns and a hot secretary, though his power may still be held by Touka, at least for the time being, so that’s a problem. The main development here is learning more about the other four Dragon Gods and the dynamic between them. First off, apparently that name was put on them by people in awe of their powers, and second, the five of them have never actually met each other (until now when Ignia involved himself in last week’s fight, but I’m not sure that counts). That does lay out some mystery for the group to investigate, especially in the case of Viernes who has the least public information. This then dovetails the characters towards finding Aldoron, the Wood Dragon God, who is apparently the largest dragon alive and, somewhat appropriately, the focus of the longest arc in this sequel series thus far at thirty nine chapters in the manga, so it will likely be at least a few months long in the anime.

But that isn’t the only thing our heroes will have to deal with, as this episode ends with them finding out about a knockoff Fairy Tail guild called Fairy Nail. We’ve seen shonen shows with a cast of in-universe famous people end up with imitators trying to leech off that popularity, take One Piece and its fake Straw Hats as an example, but so far it doesn’t seem like Fairy Nail is meant to be malicious. We’ll have to wait and see to be sure, but there’s definitely some real bad eggs to deal with already, like Diabolos and their continuing hunt for Dragon Gods, along with Touka and her seeming defeat of the Fairy Tail guild. And with one arc under its belt, I think I can say that, at least so far, this show is balancing its plots pretty well while keeping room open to add new ones as needed. There’s a reason that Fairy Tail as a brand has managed to endure for so long…and that’s because of all the fanservice. But ASIDE FROM THAT, it knows how to keep people guessing and interested in seeing what’s next. And we’ll see what’s next with the beginning of the new arc.
